Two unexpected discoveries cause closure of busy Des Moines road

Two unexpected discoveries cause closure of busy Des Moines road
NEW DETAILS. RIGHT NOW, A BUSY STREET IN DES MOINES IS CLOSED BECAUSE OF AN UNEXPECTED DISCOVERY. CREWS FOUND ISSUES WITH THE SEWER SYSTEM UNDER UNIVERSITY AVENUE ARE PART OF IT. KCCI LAURA TERRELL IS THERE TONIGHT. LAURA CREWS ALSO FOUND SOMETHING ELSE SURPRISING. THEY DID. STACY IT’S KIND OF A MYSTERY. IT’S A WOODEN STRUCTURE THAT THEY THINK IS AN OLD BRIDGE. AND BECAUSE OF THESE DISCOVERIES, YOU CAN SEE UNIVERSITY AVENUE IS CLOSED AND IT’S GOING TO BE CLOSED FROM 31ST TO 42ND FOR THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS. LOUD CONSTRUCTION AND A SEA OF ORANGE STRETCHES DOWN UNIVERSITY AVENUE. CREWS WERE ALREADY HERE FOR A REPAVING PROJECT, BUT NOW THAT PROJECT JUST GOT A LOT MORE COMPLICATED DUE TO THIS DISCOVERY. A WOODEN STRUCTURE UNDERGROUND, WHICH APPEARS TO BE AN OLD BRIDGE, IS A MYSTERY TO CITY ENGINEERS. WE’RE NOT CERTAIN OF WHAT IT IS OR WHAT IT’S WHAT IT WAS INTENDED FOR. BUT THERE’S BUT THERE’S A VOID UNDERNEATH THE ROAD. AND WE NEED TO WE NEED TO FIX IT. THEY NOW NEED TO REMOVE THAT WOOD AND REFILL THE AREA WITH CONCRETE IN BETWEEN 37TH AND 39TH STREET. ANOTHER MESS, CREWS FOUND TWO SPOTS WHERE THE SEWER SYSTEM FAILED. THE SANITARY SEWER GOES RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROADWAY. SO WE NEED TO CLOSE THE ENTIRE STREET. THAT CLOSURE IS CREATING SOME CHAOS FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE NEARBY, LIKE RICK CLARK, NOW WITH A BROKEN HIP, HE HAS TO WALK AN EXTRA MILE TO CATCH THE BUS. I GOT TO WALK ALONG THE WAYS THE BUSSES AREN’T EVEN RUNNING DOWN HERE ANYMORE. THEY’RE GOING LIKE ON INTERSTATE 235. WHILE THIS PROJECT IS A NUISANCE FOR SOME OTHERS ARE GLAD IT’S HAPPENING. JASON CRUZ OWNS PROPERTY RIGHT OFF UNIVERSITY AND NOTICED PROBLEMS WITH THE SEWER SYSTEM BACK IN 2015 AFTER A HEAVY RAIN. THE SEWER SYSTEM COULDN’T KEEP UP. THAT WATER ACTUALLY FLOODED INTO THE GARAGE AND FLOODED UP BASEMENT. BRUCE HOPES ALL OF THIS WILL PAY OFF, EVEN IF IT CAUSES A MESS FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS. IT IS A LITTLE DISTURBANCE NOW, BUT HOPEFULLY LONG TERM IN A COUPLE OF YEARS IT’S GOING TO KEEP BRINGING THE VIBRANCE THAT WE WANT IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. AND THERE ARE DETOUR SIGNS AROUND HERE DIRECTING DRIVERS OF WHERE TO GO USING I-235 42ND STREET AND 31ST. NOW, THIS IS SUPPOSED TO LAST UNTIL AT LEAST JUNE SIX. CITY ENGINEERS TELL US IT COULD BE LONGER DEPENDING ON IF THEY MAKE ANY MORE DISCOVERIES. REPORTING LIVE IN DES MOINES TONIGHT, LAURA TERRE

Crews were already on University Avenue for a repaving project, but the discovery of an underground wooden structure threw a wrench into construction plans.

City engineers are baffled by the wooden structure, which appears to be an old bridge.

"We're not certain of what it is or what it is intended for, but there is a void underneath the road and we need to fix it," said Steve Naber, Des Moines city engineer.

Crews will need to remove the wood and refill the area with concrete.

Crews also found two spots where the sewer system failed between 37th Street and 39th Street.

"The sanitary sewer goes right down the middle of the roadway, so we need to close the entire street," Naber said.

KCCI spoke to some residents in the area, who had mixed reactions to the project.

Rick Clark, who has a broken hip, said he now has to walk an extra mile to catch the bus.

"I've got to walk a long ways. The buses aren't even running down here anymore. They are going like on Interstate 235," Clark said.

Jason Kruse said he noticed problems with the sewer system in 2015 after a heavy rain.

"The sewer system couldn't keep up, so the water actually flooded into the garage, and it flooded our basement during that event," Kruse said. "It is a little disturbance now, but hopefully long-term in a couple years, it's going to keep bringing the vibrance that we want in this neighborhood."
