WORKING ON IT AND MAKING PROGRESS. WELL, THE FOOD AND DRINK ARE ALMOST READY AND THE CELEBRATION FESTIVAL IS COMING TO DOWNTOWN DES MOINES TODAY. THIS YEAR IS THE EVENT’S 20TH YEAR AND ORGANIZERS HAVE A LOT PLANNED FOR THE MILESTONE. KCCI NICOLE TAM JOINS US LIVE FROM DOWNTOWN TO EXPLAIN WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT. GOOD MORNING, NICOLE. WE HEAR THE GENERATORS GOING SO A LOT OF EXCITEMENT READY FOR LATER TODAY. THIS IS ALSO A CHANCE FOR PEOPLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DIVERSITY OF ASIA. THERE’S 15 VILLAGES FOR PEOPLE TO VISIT AND LEARN MORE ABOUT EACH GROUP’S HISTORY AND CULTURE, AND THAT INCLUDES CHINESE, FILIPINO, INDONESIAN AND HMONG. THIS FESTIVAL IS PUT ON BY THE IOWA ASIAN ALLIANCE. AND LAST YEAR, OFFICIALS SAY THAT THERE WAS MORE THAN 80,000 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE. MAY IS ALSO ASIAN AMERICAN PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH. SO THIS FESTIVAL IS A GREAT WAY FOR PEOPLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ASIAN CULTURE. DES MOINES HAS ORIGINALLY BEEN ONE OF THE HOMES FOR A LOT OF ETHNIC MINORITIES AS WELL AS REFUGEES. AND SO BEING ABLE TO SHOWCASE AND SHARE THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES AND THEIR BACKGROUNDS HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY. FINAL PREPARATIONS ARE NOW UNDERWAY AT THIS HOUR. The CelebrAsian festival returns this weekend in downtown Des Moines.This year is the event's 20th year and organizers have a lot planned for the milestone. People can expect a lot of food and entertainment and a chance to learn more about the diversity within Asia. There are 15 villages for people to visit and learn more about each group's history and culture including Chinese, Filipino, Indonesian and Hmong. The Iowa Asian Alliance hosts the festival and last year, officials saw more than 80,000 people in attendance."Des Moines has originally been one of the homes for a lot of ethnic minorities as well as refugees. Being able to showcase and share the cultural experiences and their backgrounds has been a wonderful opportunity," said Tina Thai, CelebrAsian 2023 festival chair. May is also Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month so the festival is an excellent way for more people to learn about Asian culture.
