Since Iowa legalized fireworks we’ve opined multiple times on the wisdom of this decision. There are noise and pollution issues in urban areas. Each municipality has been free to form their own regulations, or outright ban them, which creates confusion. And, policing is nearly impossible. I’m sure we’ve come across as though we’re anti-fireworks. Quite the contrary, we love a great fireworks show. The bigger, the better. We just think safety, and common sense should rule the day when it comes to the backyard displays. This year we once again raise our voice about fireworks. Most of Iowa is experiencing some form of drought conditions. While slightly better here in central Iowa, it’s still abnormally dry. Fireworks in this environment may not just be a nuisance for neighbors. They could be downright dangerous. And this impacts both urban and rural areas. In fact, in rural areas with their abundance of grassy, wooded spaces, the danger of a fire could be even greater. We ask you all to keep this in mind.
