The Dragons were down, but never out. No. 1 seed Johnston rallied from a 5-3 deficit Friday night to beat Ames 6-5 in 8 innings and repeat as Class 4A Champs. Ames, vying for its first title since 1961, came painfully close to pulling off the upset. Mistakes proved costly, however, as Johnston tied the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. In the 8th inning, Adam Kayko won it for Johnston with an RBI single to right, setting off the wild celebration.In the Class 3A Championship, North Polk fell to top-seed Western Dubuque 6-2.STATE BASEBALL CENTRALAt State Softball in Fort Dodge, Iowa City Regina beat Van Meter 6-2 to win Class 2A.
