'Something that nobody could predict': Motorcyclist injured after being hit by flying tire
HAPPENED. MARCUS. STACEY THE CRASH HAPPENED LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON. NOW, WE SPOKE WITH THE MAN EARLY TODAY WHO LIVES IN THIS AREA, THE AREA OF I-235 AT 31ST STREET. HE TELLS US HIS REACTION TO WHAT HE DESCRIBES AS A BIG BOOM. I COME OUT THE FRONT DOOR AND I SAW A BUNCH OF SMOKE RIGHT ON TO 35 HERE. SO RONALD DANIELS WENT RUNNING. I WENT OVER THERE AND I SAW THE MOTORCYCLE ON FIRE. AND I LOOKED DOWN WEST AND I SAW THEM PUTTING THE GUY ON THE GURNEY. SO HOW DID THIS HAPPEN WITH HIM? CLEAR DOWN THERE AND THE BIKE CLEAR DOWN BY THE BRIDGE. THE CRASH SLOWED TRAFFIC FOR A FEW HOURS ON BOTH I-235 EAST AND WESTBOUND DES MOINES POLICE SERGEANT PAUL PARIZEK SAYS THE EARLY INVESTIGATION SHOWS WHAT HAPPENED WAS NOT CRIMINAL, BUT MORE LIKELY AN ACCIDENT. PARIZEK SAYS THE PICKUP LOST A TIRE. THE TIRE BOUNCED OVER THE MEDIAN AND HIT THE MOTORCYCLIST, MEANING THE DRIVER OF THE PICKUP WILL LIKELY NOT BE CHARGED. WHEN WE’RE INVESTIGATING SERIOUS CRASHES, THERE’S USUALLY SOME SCIENCE THAT POINTS US IN THE DIRECTION OF SOME TYPE OF A DRIVER ERROR OR A DRIVER BEHAVIOR. THIS IS JUST SOMETHING THAT IT A TOTAL FLUKE, JUST SOMETHING THAT NOBODY PROBABLY COULD PREDICT. AND NOBODY PROBABLY COULD PREVENT. THE JOHNSTON MAN ON THE MOTORCYCLE WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET. HE’S STILL IN THE HOSPITAL LISTED IN CRITICAL CONDITION. POLICE HAVE NOT YET RELEASED HIS NAME. WE’RE LIVE IN DES MOINES. I’M MARC
