New Laser-Engraved Table for the Truck Camper Adventure Rig

There’s nothing like a good table. Better yet, a good, laser engraved table. Aside from being sturdy, a good, truck camper table should be both attractive and functional. It should also be durable enough to withstand the rigors of off-road travel, yet light enough to not be a burden in day-to-day use. A heavy mahogany table just isn’t practical in a boat or truck camper, teak or a quality birch is much more practical.

If you’re like me, you enjoy looking at photographs of six and seven figure yachts and expedition vehicles like the EarthRoamer. Aside from their comforts and capabilities, one thing I’ve always loved about them is their dining tables. Most are gorgeous, often featuring inlay wood, maps, inscriptions, and other clever designs. One up and coming trend to table design is laser engraving. After drooling over several laser-engraved designs online, I approached one of our sons, AJ, who owns SmithCreek Mill, a successful wood shop, to make one for our new Bundutec Roadrunner. We considered several proposed designs, but ultimately decided on a table top rendition of the state where we currently live, Arizona.

We love our custom Arizona table. The table top design features a map of all of the Interstates, all of the major cities in the state, the major rivers, all of the national parks, and includes illustrations of key attractions in the state: Monument Valley, Route 66, San Francisco Peaks, Sedona, the Colorado River, and Tombstone are all here. The table even features an illustration of the state bird, the Cactus Wren, and state flower, the Sagauro Cactus Flower. The only things it lacks is a roadrunner. Maybe next time.

This particular laser-engraved table in our camper measures 20×28 inches and is made of birch.

We were so pleased with the result that we encouraged our son to go further by revealing several new table designs at the recent Truck Camper Adventure Rally in Quartzsite. The response at the rally was overwhelmingly positive with over two dozen orders. His birch, laser-engraved tables now include renditions of the United States, Arizona, Utah, Route 66, the Grand Canyon, and a 3D replica of the Grand Canyon. The cost is very reasonable, starting at only $205 for a basic design and $267 for a full-featured designed like ours. Custom, one-off designs can even be ordered for extra.

Custom tables by Smithcreek Mill can be made to match the table sizes found in any recreational vehicle and can be made to match any mounting system, including sleeper dinettes. Designs can even include names and logos of your favorite manufacturer. As a matter of fact, permission was just obtained from Northwood Manufacturing to use the Arctic Fox logo in any design made for an Arctic Fox camper.

Of course, a big part of the overall appeal of our dinette is the special table mount. It’s called the Lagun, a swivel mount designed in Sweden. What’s great about this special swivel mount is that both the table and the mount can rotate 360 degrees, providing us with an almost unlimited number of options for positioning the table. The table can even be moved out of the way to create even more floor space and to provide easier access to the overhead storage cabinets.

If your dinette table is worn out, the wrong size, or just plain drab, a new table might do the trick. It certainly livened-up the interior of our camper, not that we needed it, but it does look great. If you’re happy with your table, but you’re looking for a portable, folding one, SmithCreek Mill makes those too! The design is reminiscent of a TV tray and folds away when not in use.
