Aside from their sheer size, what makes these magnificent beasts noteworthy is that all were present at the recent Truck Camper Adventure Quartzsite Rally. While we had a good mixture of campers of all sizes of the 403 campers present, a good number that we counted sported two or three slide-outs. What this tells us is that a good number of those who opt for a truck camper want all of the amenities and don’t want to rough it. Known as “glamping,” this type camping involves accommodations and facilities more luxurious than those found in traditional camping. The diversity of truck camper sizes at the rally also tells us that we are fortunate to have choices. If you want a smaller, lighter truck camper, there are plenty of manufacturers from which to choose. Likewise, if you want something larger and more palatial, there are plenty of manufacturer’s that offer those too. Unfortunately, with Adventurer Manufacturing discontinuing it’s Eagle Cap brand in order to focus on its popular Scout brand, the number of manufacturers offering multiple slide-out truck campers has gone down. That leaves three companies—Host, Lance, and Rugged Mountain—but three is more than enough. These companies offer several double and triple-slide campers providing everything one could want—oddly, you won’t find a Northwood Arctic Fox here in the survey because the company’s catalogue offers only single-slide campers. The best of the best. Idaho-based Rugged Mountain has taken the industry by storm with a number of cutting-edge truck campers. Not only is the Denali 3S Rugged Mountain’s largest truck camper, but it’s also the largest triple-slide in the industry with 250 square feet of living space. The Denali 3S features a wood frame, real wood paneling, painted beadboard walls, hard wood cabinets, and one-piece molded fiberglass front cap. Host Industries’ best selling camper, the Host Mammoth 11.6 is also a personal favorite with Truck Camper Adventure readers due to its sheer size and magnificent layout. Part of what makes the Host Mammoth so attractive is that it features three slide-outs, providing an amazing 180 square feet of living space. The 11-foot 6-inch floorplan includes a large dinette, a massive dry bath, a fireplace, a comfortable loveseat, and a queen-size bed with an option for a king. Standard features include a two-way 8-cubic foot refrigerator, a 6-gallon water heater, a 25,000 BTU propane fired furnace, a 1,000 watt inverter, and a three-burner propane cook top with a folding cook top cover. Not only that, the holding tanks in this aluminum-framed camper are among the largest in the industry with 65 gallons of fresh, 51 gallons of grey, and 31 gallons black. With a wet weight of 4,628, you’ll need a one-ton DRW truck to haul and camp in this beauty, but you’ll be able to do it in comfort and style. The Lance 1172 features a north-south 80×60-inch queen-size bed; giant windows and skylights that bathe the interior in light, a “super slide” dinette and galley with flip-up counter extension, and a rear wall slide-out with a sofa “incliner” to relax in or use as a bed.
