Thomas Shadd’s Amazing Phoenix Camper Rig has Sold

Every once in a while we come across a rig for sale that is worthy of being promoted as more than a simple classified ad. This is one such rig. Owned by Thomas Shadd, this rig consists of a custom Phoenix truck camper mounted on a Ram 4500 outfitted with super singles. As Thomas’ write-up clearly reveals, this is more than just your standard, cookie-cutter truck camper—it’s an amazing piece of craftsmanship. It’s too bad that Phoenix Campers no longer makes custom campers. Those who are looking for custom Phoenix Camper will want to jump on this one, before they’re gone for good.

We are selling our custom Phoenix truck camper and Ram 4500 truck with super singles. Work on this rig began in 2019 and was completed in 2022 after a full year on a waitlist and two years of construction during COVID. This rig has been our trusted companion on many memorable trips in the short time we’ve owned it. We have taken it to national parks such as the Tetons, Glacier, Yellowstone, Theodore Roosevelt, Badlands, and New River Gorge without a single issue.

We had this meticulously-built truck and camper combo built to cater to our active duty, military lifestyle, spending a lot of time traveling and moving across the country. However, due to changes in our careers (separating from active duty,) relocation from Montana back to the east coast, and purchasing a home with an HOA that does not allow RVs or campers, we find ourselves in a position where we can no longer fully utilize a rig like this.

The truck is a 2016 RAM 4500 SLT 4×4 with an 84-inch CA length and powered by a 6.7L Cummins engine with a G56 six-speed transmission. It has approximately 127,000 miles on it and comes with a cloth interior with bench seats, providing comfortable space for six passengers. The truck includes many nice features, including an 8.4-inch U-Connect screen, OEM leather steering wheel with controls upgrade, OEM running boards, cruise control, keyless entry and alarm with 2 fobs, and an OEM backup camera. The truck also has dual fuel tanks with a total capacity of 74 gallons and comes with service records under our ownership. It also includes the original window sticker and owners manual.

The truck has been modified with several high-quality upgrades, including a 2.5-inch Hard Fab Lift kit front and rear, adjustable track bar, Kelderman two-stage air ride system with a 2.5-inch hitch, Alpharex LED headlamps, aftermarket grill with LED marker lights, hood-mounted solar panel, AEV front bumper, AEV high mark fender flares, AEV snorkel (new in box), ATS turbo, Pusher Charge pipe, EGR delete, custom drivability tune/delete, stainless FloPro exhaust with muffler, Expedition Essentials electronics dash mount (new in box), LED tail lights, Breezer rear window that is removable for camper crawl-through, Baja Designs SAE fog lights, S&B intake (new in box), Buckstop SRW forged aluminum wheels and spare ($5500), Centramatic tire balancers, Timbren rear bump stops, Factor 55 winch hook, aftermarket TPMS sensor kit, and surround view security cameras (new in box). The truck also comes with 41-inch Continental MPT 81 tires with only 3,000 miles on them and an MM3 tuner included with an A-pillar mount. When the camper is removed, the truck has a diamond plate flat bed and fenders, keeping it street legal.

In addition to the upgrades, the truck has had several repairs and replacements since our ownership, including a new clutch with only 2k miles on it, new brakes, recent service, turbo, shocks, drag link, steering stabilizer, and new ball joints. It also comes with a fresh 4WD alignment that was completed after the lift install.

The truck does have some minor cosmetic issues, including a small ding in the passenger door that should be a good candidate for PDR, a few chips in the windshield (no cracks), and interior fabrics that show their age (no rips/tears, just needs a deep clean). My plan was to upgrade to leather and remove the backseat. The power Fiamma awning also needs to be adjusted to close unassisted as the rear is angled down a little too much to shed water. The truck is in overall excellent condition and is ready for its next adventure.

The camper is a 2022 Phoenix Custom camper with a clean and clear MSO in hand. Designed from ground-up using my own floor-plan. This is a true one-off and they have since decided not to do any more custom creations.

Designed for true four-season use. Several nights spent in Montana and Wyoming winters and hot/humid mid Atlantic summers, I lived in this camper for three months straight while we waited on our house, again, no issues.

Stock parts include bumper, grill, dually tires and wheels, and much more.

Comes with all the camping accessories you might need (hoses, filters, adapters, leveling blocks, etc.)

I stopped keeping track, but I have over $225,000 invested in this rig. If you want to go where most can’t and turn a lot of heads while doing it, this is the truck camper rig for you.

This custom camper and truck is ready for your next adventure. Fly in and drive it home. I would not hesitate to drive this truck anywhere. It has been meticulously maintained, with many upgrades and additions for optimal performance and comfort. The truck is reliable and powerful, while the camper is well-equipped with modern amenities for comfortable living on the road. The camper is designed with attention to detail and offers plenty of storage space, a cozy sleeping area, and a functional bathroom. The rig has been tested and proven on several adventures.

Due to changes in our circumstances, we are reluctantly selling this beloved rig. The truck has a clean title and the camper has a clean MSO, both in-hand. I was able to finance both through USAA before paying them off. Several additional parts and upgrades are included with the sale if the buyer desires. Don’t miss this opportunity to own a top-quality custom, one-of-a-kind truck camper setup that is turn-key and ready for your next adventure!
