About Us

Truck Camper Adventure is the brain child of Michael Smith (aka Mello Mike). The website was founded as a simple blog in 2012 and evolved into an online magazine in 2015. After retiring from the US Navy as a CWO3 in 2004 and working as a project manager in the civilian sector for over a decade, Michael wanted to venture out on his own for a change and that’s how Truck Camper Adventure got started.

The pathway to success wasn’t easy. There was a lot of resistance at first from the competition and from some manufacturers who didn’t like having another voice in the industry, let alone an independent one. Yet Truck Camper Adventure was able to slowing penetrate the marketplace with free advertising and articles for the truck camper industry and low rates. Truck Camper Adventure has now grown into a web magazine with a readership of nearly 3 million per year with over 30 advertisers and partners including some of the largest names in the industry. In spite of the success, Truck Camper Adventure’s rates remain among the lowest in the industry.

Truck Camper Adventure is different from the competition. While we offer truck camper news, reviews, and travel tips like other websites, we cover the entire industry regardless of whether a company advertises with us or not. Moreover, our reviews are written by those who own the product, not paid “infomercials” like you find on other websites which claim to be “unbiased” and “impartial.” Truck Camper Adventure also hosts an annual rally in Quartzsite, Arizona each February and sometimes hosts 4WD caravan runs in unique and scenic places in the American West.

We cover all types of truck campers here at Truck Camper Adventure. It doesn’t matter if it’s a slide-in or a chassis-mount, a hard-side or pop-up, if it’s a truck camper and it’s carried on a truck, we cover it. Basically, we specialize in overland truck campers of all types designed and built to go off-road and off-grid, including reviews of equipment and gear used to support such excursions. As such, you’ll usually find us covering one or more Overland Expos each year.

Truck Camper Adventure caters to the off-road, overland expedition crowd. We are an advocate for the responsible use of public lands through exploration, outdoor recreation, and off-grid camping. As a result, you won’t find any ridiculous RV park ratings or top 25 campground lists on Truck Camper Adventure. Instead what you’ll find are write-ups and tips on breath-taking destinations and off-road trails that can be explored and enjoyed in your truck camper. “Get away from the campground” is our motto. If getting away from the campground is your modus operandi, too, then you’ll like what Truck Camper Adventure has to offer.

Reviews are what we do best here at Truck Camper Adventure. Unlike our competition, we don’t “pay to play,” meaning we review truck campers and truck camper related products by all companies, whether they advertise with us or not. Moreover, we only review products that we own. This ensures that Truck Camper Adventure remains an unbiased, independent source for information for the community. As such, we are always in need of honest, thorough evaluations of products, so if you’re interested in writing a review of your truck, truck camper, or truck camper related product, contact us and we’ll get you on the publishing schedule.

Truck Camper Adventure is, and will remain, politically neutral. Aside from supporting the truck camper community, this site has only one agenda—to promote the use and enjoyment of our public lands through the use of truck campers and other four-wheel drive vehicles like Jeeps.
